This programme has been a project I and the members of The Lydians' music team have been considering for some time. Born out of a lime with members of my undergraduate composition class, and a chat with my Uni music undergrad thesis supervisors – both official and coerced (Mrs Ramlal, Mrs Cox – Neaves, and Mr Murray big up yourselves) the concept was to show a musicological journey through the territories that make up the Caribbean – featuring contemporary and historic composers:
- Felstead in Jamaica in (Jonah-Oratorio – 1774-5)
- Esteban Salas y Castro in Cuba (Ave Maris Stella-Motet approx. 1788-90)
- the early to modern post-colonial works of:
=Cleophas Adderley of The Bahamas =Emile Desamours of Haiti =Jose-Maria Vitier =Noel Dexter, Marjorie Whylie, Peter Ashbourne and Kaestner Robertson of Jamaica =William Pilgrim and Paschal Jordan of Guyana =Pat Bishop, Edric Connor, J.D. Elder, Desmond Waithe and John Jacob In Trinidad and Tobago
- The work of composers in the contemporary, persons such as:
=Astra Noel, Kiara Matthews-Stephen, Michael Hudlin, Mark Brewster, Candice Caton, Natasha Joseph, Anton Williams, Andrew Samlal, and Kadesh Clouden (TT) =Hanif Lawrence, C.S. Walters (J’ca) =Keitje Greaves (St Lu) =Mitchell Nicholls (B’dos) =Dexter Fernander (Bahamas)
. This concept, mercifully saw some revision and truncation (but stay tuned for the lecture series proposal) we now come to the iteration of the present:
In Songs of Praise: A show which features sacred music and sacred themed writings from the cultures and pens of the region. Territories featured: The Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Jamaica, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago
