BIOGRAPHY
A Jamaican native, Carl Anthony Hines is a young composer/arranger, music tutor, tenor vocalist, and percussionist; he has done tertiary studies in Psychology and Sociology, most recently earning a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree from the University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine Campus. He is currently a graduate student in Cultural Studies, with an interest in Community based arts and sustainability
While in Trinidad and Tobago, Carl Anthony has served as a conductor and clinician, choirmaster and guest soloist with several church and school choirs, highlights of which include his service as guest conductor of the All Saints Anglican Church Choir at the inauguration of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago's first woman President in March 2018, and his helping in the revival of the Trinity College East Boys Choir, leading them to a successful first entry into the country's biennial Music Festival in 2020.
Musical Director, The Lydians (2020 - present)
An active member of the Lydians since 2014, in 2016 Carl Anthony took charge of the choir as Guest Conductor and Rehearsal Master on a full-time, volunteer basis. He was then appointed as Assistant Musical Director from July 2017 to July 2019, and subsequently served as Interim Musical Lead. Carl Anthony was appointed Musical Director of the Lydians effective October 1, 2020.
He is the youngest person, first non-national and first gentleman to hold this post.
In 2016 he started the Young Artists’ Workshop and In-House concert series. it has grown each year and continues to be a safe and encouraging platform for budding performers within the organization.
In his downtime, Carl Anthony enjoys attending shows, writing reviews and doing photography as a freelancer with the Trinidad and Tobago Performing Arts Network. He and a group of friends are VI Coda, a collective of chamber musicians who workshop and edit new music.
An Avid performer and writer, Carl Anthony has studied music in Jamaica under Mr Ian Hird, and at Mona was tutored by Ms Marjorie Whylie and noted composer and clinician Noel Dexter; in Trinidad he has studied with Mr Jessel Murray and Dr Jeanine Remy.
Carl Anthony has composed newly commissioned pieces of music, as well as several scored arrangements for choral and instrumental groups across the English Speaking Caribbean. He has served in capacities across several musical and artistic endeavours. While a student serving on the executives of the Mona and St Augustine Campus Chorales (University Chorale Mona, UWI Arts Chorale, St Augustine), and the UWI Arts Percussion Ensemble. Outside of University life, Carl Anthony has served as a foundation member, tenor soloist percussionist and a resident composer to the Jamaica Youth Chorale as well as a member of the Diocesan Festival Choir, 'Vocez' Vocal Chamber Ensemble, The University Singers, the Brandenburg Singers, The Jamaica National Festival Choir and The Ambrosian Ensemble. he has also served as a conductor of the Ardenne High School Alumni Choir.
As a dancer, Carl Anthony served as a company member of the Jamaica-based Company Dance Theatre (now CDT Arts), and as a guest dancer with The Metamorphosis Dance company and Astor Johnson Repertory Dance Theatre in Trinidad and Tobago. He last served as modern coach and choreographer with the UWI Dance Club at St Augustine.
